There is a nice short history of the town at this site.  Abita used to be a popular tourist spot 100 years ago.  When the first settlers came here, there were about 25 Indian families living in Abita Springs.  Eventually many of them were escorted to Oklahoma.

  Abita Springs Opry
Old time county music only 1 block from the Abita Mystery House.  A real Louisiana roots version of Austin City Limits production. 

  Tammany Trace 
The 31 mile bikeway that runs next to the Abita Mystery House.  This used to be the old railroad tracks and they were converted to a paved trail for bikes, hikers, and horses,  It goes from Covington to Slidell.  You can rent bikes at the Abita Mystery House, and other places in Abita Springs.  The Trace is one of the biggest attractions in our Parish.  It paroled by special rangers who tell me that they have seen foxes, deer, wild turkeys, swamp rabbits, rattle snakes, water moccasins and other wild animals on the path.  In the 31 miles of the trace, there are also 31 bridges.

  Abita Beer
A popular brewery and a brew pub.  Abita Beer is sold all over the U.S. now.  The brewery offers free tours and are 5 minutes from the Abita Mystery House.

  Money Hill
A new and very nice golf community about a mile from the Abita Mystery House.  This place is so big that they have set aside land for their own schools.  It used to be a Tung tree farm.  The golf course is new and well maintained.

  The Times Picayune

  Ponchartrain Vineyards
Guests are welcome to visit the winery, tasting room, visitors center and vineyards which are located 10 miles from the Abita Mystery House.  Not really in Abita Springs, but near enough. These are friends of ours who (in their words) provide distinctive regional wines to complement the extraordinary cuisine of Louisiana.  Their wines are available at many local markets and make great souvenirs to bring home to your friends.  The road from the Abita Mystery House to the winery is a good looking drive.  Tell them hello for me.

  Fontainebleau State Park
A nice park on the lake about 15 miles from the Abita Mystery House.  You can ride a bike to it from the Abita Mystery House on The Tammany Trace bikeway.

  Fort Pike
An old fort on the lake.  A nice place to take the kids, it's run by the state and it's never crowded.  About 35 miles from the Abita Mystery House.

  Honey Island Swamp Tour
One of the first swamp tours in Louisiana (since 1982).  This tour company is headed by a wetlands ecologist, Dr. Paul Wagner.  Paul is also Environmental Consultant to the South Louisiana Swamps and Preserve Manager for the Nature Conservancy's White Kitchen Natural Area the premier cypress tupelo gum swamp in Louisiana.  About 35 minutes from the Abita Mystery House.  Tell them hello for me.

  Swamp Monster Tours

  Global Wildlife Center
Zebras, buffalo, camels, etc. are about 40 minutes from the Abita Mystery House.  It is one of the few tourist attractions on our side of Lake Ponchartrain.  Pay the admission to ride on a covered wagon as they pull you in to the herds of animals.  Be sure to buy the corn that they allow you to feed the animals.  One time a camel stuck his nose into the wagon and tried to snatch my momma's purse.  When we when there during their opening season, the animals were somewhat wild and we had to really try to lure them with the buckets of corn.  Last time we were there many of the animals had figured it out and were all waiting at the opening gate where the wagon pulls in.
